Native plant resources

  1. Native plants provide the best most nutritious food for our native wildlife.  Non-native species may produce fruit and nectar but it is not as nutritious as that provided by native plants or occurs at the wrong time.  Non native species do not support some of the insects that are essential for our songbirds to raise their young
  2. Native plants survive the vagaries of Indiana weather the best! 
  3. Native plants need less water and require fewer pesticides and fertilizers
  4. Native plants are beautiful
  5. Many non-native species have the potential to become invasive which harms the environment

Where can you get native plants?  Avoid the big box stores.  They sell many invasive species.  They may sell a few natives such as redbuds, American crabapple.   Know what you are looking for.  Below are some reliable sources for native plants.
